Shooting Scars (The Artist Trilogy #2) by Karina Halle- Review

Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2)Shooting Scars by Karina Halle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book picks up shortly after Javier takes Ellie away with him, and Camden is left with his ex-wife and son. Javier is even scarier and more intense before, and now he wants Ellie to help him kill Travis. Even though Ellie has wanted revenge against Travis since she was a young girl, she doesn't want it like this- if at all. Camden's ex-wife is exactly as awful as you would expect, and he quickly pairs up with one of the few people Ellie trusts (Gus) to try and get her back. Dealing with the world of Mexican drug cartels is intense and terrifying no matter how you are involved. Javier, Ellie, and Camden have all been changed by the past years, and are all fighting for something they want badly.

I read Sins & Needles and liked it a lot, but had a hard time connecting with Ellie. Then I read On Every Street and that totally helped me understand her better, and connect with her more. Then I went back and re-read Sins & Needles and liked it even more. Then I was irritated that I had to wait so long for Shooting Scars to come out.

I love this trilogy. It's exciting, intense, and totally unpredictable. The characters are multi-dimensional and completely captivating. You never really know who you can trust or what the right thing to do even is anymore. I love that there are complexities to pretty much everything in this series. These characters have some intense feelings for one another, but I've made my decision about who I want for Ellie based on who I want for me. Camden. I love him. He took his lumps all through his teen years because he was who he was and didn't care. Now he's just grown into his hot-ass nerd self and become even more spectacular. I get why Ellie struggles with her attraction to Javier, but there is a lot there I just can't get past.

It is going to be a struggle to wait for the final installment in this trilogy. I need more of this NOW! But wait i will, even if not patiently.

Exposure by Iris Blaire- Review

Exposure (East Park #1)Exposure by Iris Blaire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Evan is a serious science student who gets excellent grades, and is studying hard to get into the grad school of her dreams. Rylan is a sexy bombshell who poses for an extremely popular underground campus erotic magazine (East Park Exposed). Also- Rylan is Evan- and being Rylan is how Evan can pay for her schooling. She does a careful job of making sure no one (aside from her bff and the photographer of East Park Exposed) knows who she really is. Then Britian (the bff photographer) decides to spice things up and increase the magazine's circulation by adding a couple hot male models to the mix. She hires Dallas, who is very hot, and who is a grad student in the science department. Dallas discovers Rylan is Evan because now he knows "both" of them in different capacities. Their photo shoots are incredibly hot and successful, and their sexual chemistry is intense. Evan/Rylan and Dallas struggle to maintain their "professional boundaries" and Evan's anonymity in the face of their growing friendship and success. Plus Dallas has a girlfriend.

Whoooo!!! This book has the perfect amount of nearly everything, angst, tension, romance, sexy stuff, conflict. I think the best part of it is that I really love the main characters. Evan is smart and dedicated to her schooling, and she is a total no-nonsense gal. She has worked hard to get herself set up in a way that will allow her to take care of herself financially and still meet her academic goals. She's pragmatic, and does what she needs to do in order to keep her top priorities met. Essentially she has to give up any sort of sex or romantic life and even friendships outside of Britian, and Delilah because she doesn't want people knowing that Evan and Rylan are the same person. She doesn't get along with the other models because she doesn't really care about any of it. She's good at it, and it makes her the money she needs. When Dallas comes on the scene, she is completely conflicted because she hasn't been attracted to anyone the way she is attracted to him in a long time. The problem is that she became attracted to him as the grad student lecturing in her class. Now he's the new model she is going to be posing erotically with.

Dallas is just fantastic in pretty much every way. He's totally hot, completely smart, and is doing the modeling gig because his girlfriend submitted his application in the hopes that he could make some money for them while he's in school. He is attracted to Rylan, but even more attracted to Evan. They are both serious students and as they study together and spend time together they experience a growing friendship that goes right along with their growing sexual attraction as they "work together".

I like that both Evan and Dallas take it seriously that he is in a relationship, even as that became challenging. It was great to see a story where once the two main characters are attracted to one another, the other person in the relationship doesn't have to become a villain. This felt a lot more realistic, and the way his relationship with Tricia was described and handled felt like something real and relatable. I think that is one of the things I liked best about this story. The authentic feel of everything despite what sounds like an unlikely and far-fetched situation.

The pacing is great. The sexy stuff is HOT. Overall- I enjoyed nearly everything about this book. There were a couple aspects of the story I would have liked a little more developed. However, for a shorter story (151 pages) this author really does a great job of filling that length in a substantial way. Get ready to read straight through when you pick this one up. Then get ready to re-read some parts. I just found out there will be a next in the series, and it isn't even a question whether I will pick that one up. I'm already in waiting mode.

Wicked Beat (Sinners on Tour #4) by Olivia Cunning- Review

Wicked Beat (Sinners on Tour, #4)Wicked Beat by Olivia Cunning
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In Wicked Beat, we get the story of Sinners' drummer Erick Sticks and sound engineer Rebekah. Rebekah is the sister of Dave, the sound engineer who was injured during the tour bus crash. She is filling in for her brother while he tries to recover his strength and mobility, and in addition to working her dream job she hopes to get a little something going with Sinners' guitarist Trey Mills. Eric has watched several other Sinners fall hard and find companions, and he wants a family and someone to love more than anything. He is pretty much hooked the moment he lays eyes on Rebekah, and soon it becomes obvious that they are a perfect match for each other.

Truth be told, it took me a while to come around to Eric in this series. I mostly thought he was an obnoxious pervert in Backstage Pass and Rock Hard- but I started getting to know him a little better better in Hot Ticket, and now I love him. We got a few glimpses of how far he would go to protect his fellow band members, and the surprising depth of his musical talent is in past stories, but in this installment we finally get to learn his thoughts, feelings, insecurities- and now he is one of my favorite Sinners without a doubt. Is he still obnoxious? Sure. Is he still a total horn-dog? Yes. He is also completely endearing, and I was really glad that he found someone to share himself with.

Rebekah is a great character. She is smart, interesting, and lives life to the beat of her own drummer (pun not entirely intended). She is good at her job, and stands her ground despite the fact that some people would like to see her fail, and are working to make that happen. Rebekah has had some pretty serious obstacles in her life, and even though she has moved past some of her challenges, there are some lingering after-effects. She also has one of the most difficult mothers ever!

Once Eric and Rebekah find each other it feels wonderful to see them give each other the love and support they need and deserve. They are hilarious, playful, and their sexual chemistry is off the charts. I think they are one of the most chiming and well-matched Sinners' couples. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was seeing the other band members really around Eric and Rebekah, and help make their relationship thrive.

If you've read the others in this series, I won't need to suggest that you read this because you will already be reading it. This is a great addition to the Sinners on Tour series, and now on to Trey's story...

Real by Katy Evans- Review

Real (Real, Raw & Ripped, #1)Real by Katy Evans
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Brooke is a former Olympic hopeful turned trainer after her dreams are dashed by a devastating injury that ends her track career. She goes to an underground boxing match where she meets Remington Tate who is a very hot and very fierce fighter. Their attraction to each other is fast and visceral. The next thing Brooke knows, she has been hired to be Remy's trainer for the remainder of the season. Despite their obvious attraction to one another something is holding Remy back from giving in all the way to a relationship with brook. He wants her to know him first, including the dark stuff. And there is definitely some dark stuff.

Whooo!!! There is some seriously hot stuff going on in this book. I'll get my couple of gripes out of the way so I can move on. I work in the mental health field, and I had to decide early on to read some of the bipolar stuff like I would read a paranormal book and just suspend my disbelief to enjoy the story. I also found the frequent use of the writing device where one word sentences are used for emphasis a bit distracting. It was used So. Many. Times.

Now to the good stuff. This book hooked me from the beginning. The sexual tension and heat between Remy and Brooke was scorching! And constant. And awesome. This was one of those where after you start- you don't stop reading until it is done. I also loved the connection Brooke and Remy shared beyond the physical. They are both serious athletes (although Brooke is no longer competing) and they have an appreciation and understanding of one another and they way they live that not many others can share. It was fantastic to experience the incredible tension that built as they slowly moved towards giving in to what they both wanted. It was also wonderful to see them both trying hard to have a relationship despite some pretty serious challenges. Brooke and Remington have very different pasts, but are both who they are today because of the traumas they have experienced. I was cheering them on throughout the entire story and thoroughly enjoyed their intense sexual chemistry. I would gladly read more about any of the characters in this book, and am eagerly awaiting others in this series to be released.

Losing Hope (Hopeless #2) by Colleen Hoover- Review

Losing Hope (Hopeless, #2)Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How much did I love Holder after reading Hopeless? A lot. How much do I love Holder after reading Losing Hope? Even more. Sometimes when there is a companion piece to a novel from a different point of view, we don't really gain a lot of new insight. That is not the case here. While is is pretty spectacular to experience some of the same scenes from Hopeless from Holder's POV, (*ahem* best first kiss) we also get a much better understanding of what it was like for him to experience Hope's loss as a child, and his sister's death later on.

Reading provides a richness to Holder's character, and makes me want to go back and re-read Hopeless now with my new understanding of him. I liked seeing Sky's reactions from his POV as well after experiencing everything through her eyes in Hopeless. If you have read and enjoyed Hopeless, do yourself a favor and read Losing Hope. You won't be sorry.

Keeping Her (Losing it #1.5) by Cora Carmack- Review

Keeping Her (Losing It, #1.5)Keeping Her by Cora Carmack
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this novella, we are brought up to speed with Garrick and Bliss as they move forward in their relationship and their lives together. It seems like after making it through an incredibly challenging beginning to their relationship, everything would be smooth from here on out, right? Not quite. While Bliss and Garrick remain completely in love, they are headed to London so that Bliss can meet Garrick's parents. Specifically his mother, who is more than a little intimidating and also quite judgmental. We gain some insight into Garrick's past and life before he left for the United States, and it was definitely not what I was expecting. Bliss was caught off-guard too, and it was interesting to experience with her that shock of learning that someone she knows and loves has a background that is completely incongruent with the man she met and the person he is today.

It feels great to reconnect with Bliss and Garrick. They are facing some new challenges as they move from college life into "real life", and they way they are thoughtful and honest with one another is very touching. I felt a little irritated with them as a couple when I was reading Faking It because I was feeling particularly sympathetic to Cade's character in that book. This brought me right back to loving them and cheering them on as much as I did in Losing It. If you have read and enjoyed Losing It, Keeping Her is a fantastic way to touch base and keep moving forward with Garrick and Bliss. I recommend this whole series, and am looking forward to Kelsy's story in Finding It.

Black Moon (Ink, #3) by Holly Hood- Review

Black Moon (Ink, #3)Black Moon by Holly Hood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book picks up right up where we are left in Twisted Magic. Hope just seems to be getting deeper and deeper into situations she isn't sure how to deal with, and it is becoming more and more challenging to know who she can trust. Slade seems to be running away and leaving her on her own to deal with a variety of new and terrifying situations. Hutch is right there to provide support both emotionally and physically, however, there is still a lot of mystery that surround him. Hope doesn't want to misuse her power and struggles to maintain her life and relationships with her family and friends as best she can in the face of a lot of adversity.

I was still mostly pissed with Slade during the first half of this book because it felt like he wasn't being helpful and definitely wasn't giving Hope the support she needed. Hutch still seemed like he was really just there for Hope, but we definitely get to see some other sides of Hutch as the story progresses, and I was left with a lot more questions than answers about him. We also get to meet K, and he is definitely a character I want to know more about. He's pretty scary and is definitely dark, but there is something to be said for someone who says what is likely the truth because they don't seem to care about the feelings of anyone else. There is a strange honesty there, and it makes for some really intriguing possibilities.

I'm back on team Slade, but I know that there will likely be a lot more ups and downs before he and Hope are likely to have a happy easy relationship with one another. Hope seems to be getting more confident in her powers even if she chooses not to use them, and I am excited to see how all of that comes into play as she is forced to go down some roads she would not choose if she weren't looking out for those she cares about. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.
